Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Cowboys fell behind 4-0 after the top of the third and the Thunderwolves never looked back as New Mexico Highlands (17-22, 11-18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost to #11 CSU-Pueblo (34-9, 24-7 RMAC) 10-3 Friday night (April 24).
The Cowboys brought the tying run to the plate in the third, but could only manage one run. With one out and a runner at first, seniors
Colby Wilmer and
Andrew Ratterman singled to load the bases. Senior
EJ Stanton hit into a fielder's choice to score a run, but Highlands did not score any more in the inning.
Senior
Omar Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and added an RBI double in the ninth.
Garcia finished the game with 2-for-4 for two RBI's. Sophomore
Phil Trujillo took the loss, falling to 4-3 by allowing five hits and six runs in five innings of work.
The Thunderwolves manufactured a run in each of the first two innings before scoring a pair in the third. After the leadoff batter in the game was hit by pitch, he went to second on a ground ball and scored on Dominick Bregar's single. In the second, Shane Richens walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Landrith added a two-run single in the fifth and Bregar hit a home run to right in the sixth as CSU-Pueblo opened up a 9-1 lead. Bregar finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored.
Zac Wittmus picked up the win to improve to 7-1 for the visitors, allowing one run and five hits in six innings pitched.
The Cowboys return to action Saturday (April 25) with a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. Highlands will celebrate senior day at approximately 12:40 before the game.
