Volleyball Rallies Back From 2-0 Deficit

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M.- The Cowgirl volleyball team started off the season with a come from behind win against Concordia University (Calif.). After winning the first point of the match, the Cowgirls and Eagles played a tight first set that went to the Eagles 25-23. The Cowgirls were not able to take advantage of the Eagles 8 attacking errors in the first set, despite only having 2 of their own.

The second set was taken by the Eagles by a score of 25-19. The Cowgirls had 7 attack errors in the second set compared to the Eagles 4.

In the third set the Cowgirls began to make their comeback, but not before the Eagles would make a run of their own. With the Cowgirls up 16-9 the Eagles even the score at 18 all, when Head Coach Bryan Crawford called a timeout to hopefully end the Concordia streak. Luckily Coach Crawford's timing worked and the Cowgirls took the next 7 of 11 points to win the third set.

With the momentum and confidence from the third set the Cowgirls opened the fourth set on a 6-2 point run before Concordia called their first timeout of the half. With the set tied at 12, the Eagles took the next four points to force the Cowgirls to use their first timeout. Once again the Cowgirl's timeout worked to perfection as they took 7 of the next 9 points to come within one point, 19-18, where the Eagles used their final timeout of the set. Coming out of the time out the Cowgirls took the next points before going on to win the set 25-21 to force a 5th set.

With even more momentum going into the 5th set, the Cowgirl's opened the set by winning the first 6 points. With some resistance from the Eagles, the Cowgirls went on to win the set 15-7, and the match!

The Cowgirls will open the Cal State San Bernardino Tournament with the host tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Live stats and video will be available.

Coach Bryan Crawford's thoughts:

The first match of the season is always a little scary for everyone. The nerves of a game actually counting and the new athletes to the program performing for their debut match.

We had some great performances from Katie Trammel, Tarissa Mellin, and Miranda Arredondo. Katie was a major factor in bringing the team back from near defeat. She single handed my took over offensively and defensively which then brought back energy and life to other players. Tarissa was key in keeping the offense alive, delivering great sets to our hitters. Miranda came in late to the match but made some major defensive plays that turned into points which fueled the comeback.
