Comeback Not Enough For Cowboys' Wrestling

PLAINVIEW, Texas- The wrestlers return to action on tonight, January 27th, to face NAIA opponent Wayland Baptist. The Cowboys faced Pioneers on January 10th and won 35-98, but the Cowboys were not so lucky this time as the Pioneers escaped with the 24-21 victory.

The dual started off in the 165 weight class. Juan Alavardo lost in a close 8-7 decision. JB Bechtloff got the Cowboys started the Cowboy's points with a major win over Rosen-St. John 13-1. Luis Terrazas would then fall to Napier, which would give the Pioneers a 9-4 lead.

The Pioneers' Willoughby would take down Cody Marquez to give Wayland Baptist the 15-4 lead. They would continue then gain five points in the 185 weight class in a technical fall over Corbin Grenowich.

The Cowboys would then stop the Pioneers' 16 point run with a Jacob Espana in high scoring 21-10 major decision over Valdez to cut the deficate down to 20-8. The Pioneers would then take the next dual in a 17-7 major win to make it 24-8 Pioneers.

The Cowboys needed to get some points with just three duals left. Dan Gaylor would start the Cowboy's run with a major victory over Perez cutting the Wayland Baptist lead down to just 12 points. The Cowboys would receive six points in the 149 weight class due to a Pioneers' forfeit to make it 24-18. In order to tie the dual, the Cowboys would need six points from Kellen Pelzel. Pelzel would take the victory but the 2-1 decision would not be good enough for the six points the Cowboys needed.

The Cowboys will travel to Colorado-Springs for the RMAC Championships on Sunday January 31st. The RMAC Championships will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The Championship will began at 9 a.m. Tickets are just $10 for the full day of events.
