Dwight Combs Named Head Volleyball Coach

LAS VEGAS, N.M.- The Highlands Athletic Department is excited to announce the newly hired Dwight Combs Jr.as the head coach of the Cowgirl volleyball team.

Combs comes to Highlands as the former Head Coach of the women's volleyball team at University of California, Santa Cruz.
"I am elated to welcome Coach Combs to Cowboy athletics," comments Athletic Director Bob Clifford. "I believe that Dwight is the perfect fit for what we are trying to build with our program, and will strive to bring the best out of our Cowgirls. We are looking forward to seeing the growth in competitive excellence as a strong volleyball program going forward."

"I am very excited to join the program," Combs remarks. "I hope to make a positive change, to turn things around and to establish a positive, winning culture."

A native of the northern California, Combs served as the Head Coach of the University of California, Santa Cruz women's volleyball team from 2013-2015. In his short stint with the Banana Slugs, his teams won the GSAC conference title (2015), made two appearances at the NCAA tournament, the school's first appearance in history (2013), and earned the school's first 20 wins since 1994. Prior to his time at UC Santa Cruz, Combs served as the head coach of both the women's and men's volleyball teams at Holy Names University for five years. He was named "Coach of the Year" by the Cal-Pace Conference for three consecutive years in a row, 2010, 2011, and 2012.  In 2010 and 2011, his teams went undefeated and were named conference champions. In his career, he has also coached three Junior National Qualifying Juniors' teams, 2003, 2007, and 2015.

Assistant Coach Mariah Roby lends her excitement for the new addition to the program. "We are so happy to bring Dwight aboard! We can feel the spirits of the girls lifting and we are all very hopeful for the future of our program."

The Cowgirls will soon begin their official off-season and continue to move forward in their preparation for the 2016 season.
