Box Score 2 Odessa, TX- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team took on the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons in a doubleheader today.

Texas-Permian Basin Falcons Game 1
The Cowboys got started quickly in the top of the first as Senior
Jeremy McCarty smacked a 2 run home run, also bringing Junior
Luis Ornelas home with him. Senior pitcher
Phil Trujillo started and played well in the bottom of the inning. He gave up two hits, but he was able to end the inning on a strikeout.

Trujillo continued his solid outing well into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Falcons would rip 4 runs off of him before Junior
Brett Martin would relieve him of his duties. Martin would give up 2 more runs before he could get the Cowboys out of the inning.

The Cowboys were able to get their bats going a bit in the top of the sixth inning as McCarty first reached with a single. Then, Junior
Eduardo Perez found himself on by way of a walk. Junior
James Cordova also got on base with a walk, loading the bases with no outs. McCarty would go on to score, but the Cowboys picked up two quick outs off of a double play. Junior
Codie Simmons batted Perez in with a single to bring the score to 4-6.

The Falcons would pick up 1 more run in the bottom of the sixth, and the Cowboys bats would cool down as they couldn't pick up another run. They fell in the first game, 4-7.
Texas-Permian Basin Falcons Game 2
Ornelas was the only Cowboy to get on base in the top of the first, but Junior pitcher
Dakota Pacheco would shut down the Falcon batters in the bottom of the inning.

The Falcons hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving them the early 1-0 lead.

The Cowboys couldn't find a rhythm at bat in the top of the third as Simmons was the only batter to get on base. The Falcons answered with another solo home run, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.

The Falcon lead wouldn't last long as Ornelas would reach with a single in the top of the fourth. McCarty followed him with a single of his own, putting two on base with no outs. Then, Perez would step up and hit a single that allowed Ornelas to score. They were not done there as Senior
Brian Chaparro smacked a double that pushed both, McCarty and Perez across. Senior
Easton Garcia would cap off the rally as he hit the single that would allow Simmons to score the 5
th run of the inning.

Pacheco avoided trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Falcons had the bases loaded. He would get out of the inning before they could push a run across.

The Cowboys continued to score in the top of the seventh as Perez hit a single that allowed Ornelas to score once again. Perez would find his way home later off of a single by Chaparro. Pacheco continued to pitch efficiently as he sat the Flacons down in order in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, McCarty hit another single, this time to get Garcia across home plate to bring the Cowboys lead to 8-2. Graduate student
Avery Brandon would take over for Pacheco in the bottom of the eighth. He would get out of the inning without surrendering a hit.

Brandon would close out the game well for the Cowboys as he secured the win with the score reading 8-2.

The Cowboys will see the Falcons again tomorrow, February 25
th, at 12:00 p.m.
