LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team finds itself for a battle for one of the final eight spots into the RMAC Tournament with nine matches remaining and hosts two key matches this weekend against No. 22 Colorado School of Mines 7 p.m. Friday and University of Colorado Colorado Springs 6 p.m. Saturday.
COWGIRLS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND (6-11, 4-5) | SEASON STATS
The Cowgirls sit in a tie for eighth place in the RMAC with Fort Lewis (a team it lost to last weekend in five sets), a game behind UCCS and Colorado Christian who sit in a tie for sixth, a half game ahead of Chadron State and a game up on Black Hills State, Adams State and Westminster in the very congested RMAC standings.
NMHU split a pair of five setters last weekend, falling to Fort Lewis on Friday and beating Adams State on Saturday. On the season,
Tiffany Matchett continues to pace the Cowgirls in kills per set (2.91) while
Cynthia Norris is also averaging more than two per set at 2.09 and
Julie Staffler is just under at 1.98.
Celina Naranjo leads the team in assists per set at 5.0 as well as aces (0.28) while
Samantha Sjogren (3.71) and
Soleil Gandara (3.25) are also averaging more than three assists per set.
Elena Rivera continues to lead the Cowgirls in digs at 5.21 (second in the RMAC) while Matchett is averaging 3.69. Freshman
Taley Ferrari (0.67) and
Stacy Johnson (0.59) continue to lead the Cowgirls in blocks per set.
ABOUT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES (15-2, 9-0) | SEASON STATS
The Orediggers head into this weekend atop the RMAC standings having won nine matches in a row to start conference play, including wins at home against Dixie State (3-2) and Westminster (3-0) this past weekend. Colorado School of Mines has dropped only seven sets in nine conference matches.
The Orediggers are led by Abby Tiesman as she's fourth in the RMAC at 3.42 kills per set and 1.03 blocks per set while Lindsey Jin (2.38), Amanda Donais (2.33) and Janice Jin (2.28) are also averaging more than two kills per set. Mines' Drew Stokes leads the RMAC in assists per set at 11.38 while Donais is tops in the conference in aces per set at 0.40. Elle Duis is fifth in the RMAC in digs at 4.89 per set.
As a team, the Orediggers are atop the conference in hitting percentage at .254 and fourth in opponent hitting percentage at .187.
ABOUT UCCS (7-10, 5-4) | SEASON STATS
The Mountain Lions since dropping their first three RMAC games have gone 5-1 - including a five-game win streak that was snapped with a 3-1 loss at home to Dixie State on Saturday.
Alyssa Brinton leads UCCS in kills per set at 3.16 (10th in the conference) while Grace Nelson (2.35), Taylor Smith (2.35), Lauren Brown (2.23) and Josie Russell (2.18) also are averaging more than two kills per set. Raelynn Edge is third in the RMAC and tops on the team in assists (11.04) while Jordyn Kinsey is seventh in the RMAC in digs at 4.51 per set.
The Mountain Lions as a team are sixth in the conference in hitting percentage (.202) and fourth in assists per sets (12.52).
