HAYS, Kan. --- The New Mexico Highlands wrestling team had a pair of athletes place Sunday at the Bob Smith Open hosted by Fort Hays.

Chris Collins took second place at 197 pounds while
Jonathan Trujillo took third place at 149 pounds for the Cowboys.

Collins won his first two matches by fall, beating Maclean Graves of Northeastern at 3:55 and Joe Bencomo of Adams State at 4:18. In the semifinals, Collins defeated Oklahoma State's Auston Harris by a 6-2 decision. In the finals, Collins fell to Dalton Abney of Central Oklahoma in a 3-0 decision.

As for Trujillo, he dropped his first match in a 3-2 decision before winning his next five matches – including winning the third place match in sudden victory over Dusty Hone of Oklahoma State.

Also at 149 pounds,
Logan Pine was off to a strong start as he won his first match via fall, but suffered an injury in his next match that kept him out for the rest of the tournament.

Darian Manzanares (2-2 at 141 pounds),
Julian Sanchez (2-2 at heavyweight),
Tristan Trujillo (2-2 at 165 pounds),
Iyean Varela (1-2 at 125 pounds),
Dom Rivera (1-2 at 125 pounds) and
Luke Allan (1-2 at 197 pounds).

The Cowboys are off until the new year as they host Chadron State on Jan. 4 and Colorado School of Mines Jan. 5.
