Las Vegas, NM --- The Women's Soccer team has a new boss in charge as
Bianca Contreras enters her first season as head coach for the Cowgirls. She has spent the last 4 years as assistant coach for NMHU and now looks to lead the soccer team in a positive direction. The Cowgirls finished 2-13-1 overall and 2-10-1 in RMAC conference play.
The Cowgirls will open their season in Santa Fe, NM on September 6
th against Midwestern State University at 1 P.M. The Cowgirls are hoping to avenge themselves as Midwestern State won last year's 2-1 meeting between the two teams in overtime. The Cowgirls will then face Angelo State on Sunday September 8
th, in Santa Fe, NM.
The Cowgirls will return sophomore forward
Nitza Rodriguez who was second in goals scored last season with three, and also added an assist. Seniors
Carly Griego and
Janis Martinez will also look to help add to the scoring load, as they both were able to knock in a goal last season.
Carly Griego was also second on the team in minutes played last season with 1309 behind senior at the time
Anna Medina (1441).
Returning to play keeper for the Cowgirls is junior
Karina Vega. She appeared in 8 games for the Cowgirls last season and tallied 35 saves. The Cowgirls welcome keeper
Katherine Scott back to the roster as she appeared in five games for the Cowgirls in 2017 and also tallied 55 saves.
The Cowgirls will continue their season on homecoming weekend, September 20
th, against MSU-Denver at 1 p.m. in Santa Fe, NM.
