Cowboys Football set to take on New Mexico State in February

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands football team has added a game to their revised 2020-2021 schedule, as New Mexico State has agreed to host the Cowboys on February 27th, 2021 inside Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, NM.

The RMAC has cancelled the Championship for the 2020 season and has given each member institution the discretion to schedule conference and non-conference opponents as they see fit.

The Cowboys are coming off of a 2-9 season in 2019 as the Cowboys fell short in their last game against Western New Mexico 17-23. Since then, the Cowboys have added new head coach Josh Kirkland, who joined the program from the University of Incarnate Word in Texas.

Kirkland has also added a variety of coaches to assist with the rebuild of the Cowboys program. Jeremy Atwell joins after previously serving as the defensive coordinator at Nicholls State. Beau Blair joins after one year as the Offensive Line coach at Incarnate Word and will be the Offensive Coordinator for the Cowboys. After his stint as a graduate assistant for the defense at Liberty, Roy Asuega was named as the Defensive Line and Community Outreach Director for the Cowboys. Kirkland has also added Joseph Toren (Defensive Backs Coach), David May (Running Backs Coach/Academic Coordinator), Rolando Surita (Director of Football Operations), and Dillon Sharp (Assistant Defensive Backs Coach/Slash Coach).

Western Colorado, Colorado Mesa, Chadron State, Black Hills State, and South Dakota Mines have all chosen to compete this fall, although some schools have cut their seasons short with safety concerns of COVID-19.

Western Colorado traveled to Texas to take on Stephen F. Austin as the Mountaineers fell 7-64. They were then scheduled to play RMAC foe Colorado Mesa and Pittsburg State University, however, the Mountaineers canceled those two games due to COVID-19 safety concerns.

Colorado Mesa has gone 2-1 thus far having beaten Chadron State (10-7 OT) and Black Hills State (56-7) before falling to South Dakota Mines (9-24). The Mavericks are scheduled to travel to West Texas A&M on November 21st.

Chadron State has beaten South Dakota Mines two times this season (41-25,37-22) and has lost to Colorado Mesa and Nebraska-Kearney (35-45) and is scheduled to take on Black Hills State for their last game of the season on November 14th.

Black Hills State is )-2 on the season losing to both South Dakota Mines and Colorado Mesa. The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to take on Chadron State on November 14th.

South Dakota Mines is 2-2 with wins over Black Hills State and Colorado Mesa and two loses to Chadron State. The Hardrockers are scheduled to take on Nebraska-Kearney to cap off their season on November 14th.

The Cowboys game against the Aggies is the first game scheduled for the Cowboys as 2-3 more games are expected to be scheduled and those will be announced at a later date.
