Women's Track & Field out-performs themselves at the CSU Early Bird

Las Vegas, NM --- In what was the first competition for the New Mexico Highlands women's track & field squad, the Cowgirls didn't fail to disappoint as the CSU Pueblo Early Bird Track Meet on Saturday March 20th.

Saydie Moss kicked off her collegiate outdoor career with a second place finish in the Javelin (34.52 meters) on Friday afternoon as Kaitlyn Scott threw beyond her college best mark for a 4th place finish (47.74) in the hammer throw. Moss followed her performance in the Javelin with a 1st place finish in the discus with a mark of 42.41 on her first attempt.

"After a full year away from the track, I didn't know what to expect" NMHU head coach Bob DeVries commented after the first day of competition. "As coaches, we set expectations low – no pressure, lets see what happens – and then the team performs, well, like they've been waiting for a year for an opportunity to show what they are made of."

Moss followed her performance in the Javelin with a 1st place finish in the discus on Saturday with a mark of 42.41 on her first attempt as Angelina Oliver, a freshman from Albuquerque and a member of the NMHU volleyball team, made her college debut with a 2nd place finish (1.55m) in the high jump.

"Coach Hawkins, Coach Russel, and Coach Dunbar along with Coach Sanchez in the weight room and the athletic training staff have done an amazing job keeping the team focused, positive, and ready" stated DeVries.

It was really fun to watch – especially these ladies, so resilient with such grit. No matter what challenges the last year has thrown at them, they have kept grinding. We couldn't be more proud"

Along with the women competing, the New Mexico Highlands men's cross country team also was able to compete this weekend (unattached), and they performed with grit as Andrew Amor ran away with a 1st place finish in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:57. Amor fell down during the race after being bumped by another runner and tripped on the rail. Andrew popped up and ran the guy down over the last 1,000 meters. The men's team will compete in four track meets this off-season during their non-championship segment.
