The NMHU women's volleyball team took a tough five-set road loss at Fort Lewis to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Tuesday night in Durango, CO.
After dropping set one (25-16), the Cowgirls ramped up the intensity to take two straight sets (25-19, 25-20). With the defense digging everything, the offensive fire-power of
Angelina Oliver,
Terayah Stukes,
Lisi Langi and
Keegan Lopez sparked long scoring runs in both sets. Oliver and Lopez came up big in the blocking game in sets two and three with Oliver recording seven in the two sets. The Skyhawks won set four (25-17) to tie the match at 2-2.
Set five saw twelve ties and five lead changes in front of the large crowd in Fort Lewis Fieldhouse.
The Cowgirls had two match points in the fifth set battle-- both set up by Stukes kills off sets by
Soleil Gandara-- but could not put away the Skyhawks, falling 17-15 to end the RMAC opener with a 3-2 Fort Lewis win.
"The team deserved a win," said a disappointed HU head coach
Tom Duke, "I need to be better."
