LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team is looking to take another step forward and back into the RMAC postseason in 2022 as the Cowboys open the season noon Saturday against CSU Pueblo in a non-conference game in Canyon, Texas.
NMHU will take on West Texas A&M 1 p.m. Sunday to close out its road trip.
The Cowboys just missed the postseason last season at 11-23 in RMAC play - one game back of the final team to make the tournament.
NMHU returns Rawlings Gold Glove winner
Estevan De La O in center field after he committed no errors in 38 games while hitting .333 with three homers, 10 doubles, six triples and four stolen bases.
Kalen Hammer also returns after hitting .323 last season with 27 RBI while also logging 24.1 innings on the mound.
Joe Kuhn hit .319 with seven homers for the Cowboys last season and returns as well.
The Cowboys' top pitcher from last season returns in
Angel Castillo as he went 4-3 with a 5.77 ERA in 53 innings - starting seven games and appearing in three others.
Jadrian Martinez returns as well after going 1-5 with a 6.46 ERA in a team-best 61.1 innings. He started eight games, appeared in 14 and led the team with 36 strikeouts.
