LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- New Mexico Highlands' Chisom Obioha and Kaitlyn Scott were awarded All-Region honors by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the indoor season, as announced Tuesday by the USTFCCCA. The USTFCCCA bestows All-Region honors to the top five individuals in each event in their respective region. NMHU is a member of the South Central Region encompassing teams from both the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Lone Star Conference.
Scott, a senior from nearby Springer, New Mexico, earned her award after throwing a personal record of 58 feet, 11 inches (17.97m) to take runner-up honors in the weight throw at the RMAC championships and rank fifth among all throwers in the region. Obioha, a freshman from British Columbia, Canada, ended the indoor season as the fifth-ranked long jumper in the region with a mark of 18-11 3/4 (5.77m) set at the MLK Invite in Albuquerque.
"Earning All-Region is a big deal," NMHU head coach Bob DeVries said. "The South Central is one of the strongest track and field regions in DII. Seven of the top 20 teams at indoor nationals came out of our region."Â
The Cowgirls continue the outdoor season today and Saturday at the Spank Blasing Open hosted by CSU Pueblo.
