After four meets over three days in southern California, the New Mexico Highlands University women's track and field team will turn attention to the conference championships in two weeks.
"It was a little hectic, challenging and a real learning experience for a lot of our athletes," noted HU head coach
Bob DeVries of his teams' efforts in California, "but, we got two wins, a half dozen personal bests and a good sense of what we can do at the RMAC championships."
Beatrice Armijo was a "real highlight of the weekend" according to the DeVries. former West Las Vegas High School standout came up with collegiate bests in both the 100 hurdles (15.21) and 400 hurdles (1:05.35) to put herself into the conference top-10 in both events.
Selisa Palmer waited until the Cowgirls' final event on Saturday at the Beach Invite to put herself into the conference mix in the 200. The freshman from Jamaica ran 25.08 - good for No. 8 in the RMAC and a half second off an NCAA qualifying mark.
At Friday's Bryan Clay meet at Asuza Pacific, Cowgirl Katy Scott was the only DII athlete to make the finals in the hammer throw. Scott launched four throws over the 50-meter mark and placed seventh in the field of more than 60 athletes.
The Cowgirls will have a small group of athletes competing Thursday at the University of New Mexico before traveling to South Dakota the following week for the RMAC Championships.
