Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team used a nine-run eighth inning to propel itself to a 12-6 victory over CSU Pueblo in the opener of the four-game series Friday night at Rawlings Field.
The Cowboys (10-23, 6-11) trailed the ThunderWolves (20-15, 11-6) 4-3 heading to the top of the eighth before nine consecutive batters reached – highlighted by an RBI single by
Estevan De La O, an RBI single by
Brandon Baier, a two-run single by
Jared Brown, an
Aidan McNichol two-run double and an
Allan Salas two run single to make it 11-4 before a two-out RBI single by Lubby Marujo made it 12-4.
CSU Pueblo scored two in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-6, but the Cowboys and
Dominick Castillo was able to close it out to pick up the save.
Hunter Waugh pitched a solid seven innings for the Cowboys, giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
De La O finished the game 3-for-6 with a home run to lead off the game, two RBI and two runs,
Kalen Hammer went 3-for-5 with a run, Marujo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, McNichol finished 2-for-6 with a home run, double, four RBI and two runs, Baierwent 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run and
Joe Kuhn went 2-for-4 with two runs.
The teams meet again Saturday in a doubleheader with the first game beginning at noon.
