LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highland women's track and field team will have three participants at the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held May 26-28 in Allendale, Michigan.
Annie Topal has qualified for the triple jump,
Kaitlyn Scott has qualified for the hammer throw and
Kaitlyn Holl is qualified in the long jump.
"Our goal every year is to put as many athletes as we can on the podium at conference and get as many as possible to nationals," NMHU coach
Bob DeVries said. "We hoped to get a relay team to the NCAA meet until some untimely injuries."
Topal, the 2019 triple jump national champion, is fifth in the nation at 12.78 meters (41 feet, 11.25 inches) heading into the national championships. Scott sits in 20th with a mark of 55.44 meters (181-11) and Holl bolted her way up to 19th in the long jump with a second-place finish at the RMAC Championships with a distance of 5.98 meters (19-7.5).
"We knew Annie was in and had our fingers crossed that Katy and Kaitlyn would be selected," DeVries added. "It's a huge honor to have an opportunity to compete at nationals."
The NCAA sets a minimum field size of 18 for each event and then athletes are chosen based on the quality of their season-best performances to complete the field.
