Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls pulled out a miraculous 3-2 (20-25, 11-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-11) win over the Colorado School of Mines Friday evening in front of a raucous crowd in the Wilson Complex. NMHU improves to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Friday's win snapped a 16 match losing streak to the Orediggers dating back to October 1, 2004.
The Orediggers came out firing early and beat the Cowgirls convincingly in the first two sets of the match. The Cowgirls ran off nine consecutive points capped by a
Meg Pfannerstill kill to capture the third set. It was back and forth in set number four until the Cowgirls found themselves trailing 23-17, but a 9-1 run to close out the set earned the Cowgirls a win and a fifth set. In set number five the Orediggers led 10-9 and the Cowgirls used yet another late run, this time 6-1, to close out the match.
"This was a gritty team win. We told this team back in August we were going to know how to battle and fight and that is exactly what we did tonight," said Head Coach
Meg Grose. "It was a good win and our fans were amazing tonight."
Senior
Angelina Burton recorded 11 kills for the Cowgirls, her third consecutive match with double digit kills. She added three blocks on Friday.
Freshman
Meg Pfannerstill recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Olivia Archuleta had 16 digs.
For the match the Cowgirls hit .122 as a team.
The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow evening when they host nationally-ranked MSU-Denver at 6:00 pm.
