New Orleans, Louisiana - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2023 Cross Country All-Academic Teams and All-Academic Athletes late last week. Both New Mexico Highlands cross country teams and a pair of student-athletes were recognized by the organization.
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period and compile a team score at their respective regional championship meet.
The men's cross country team posted a combined GPA of 3.11 while finishing ninth at the South Central Regional Championship and 18th at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
The women's cross country team had a team GPA of 3.21 and finished 24th at the South Central Regionals in October.
Individually, to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-30 percent of their respective regional championship meet.
Two members of the men's team captured All-Academic Athlete recognition from USTFCCCA. Senior
Andrew Amor (Exercise Science major) and
Celso Garcia (Music major). 2023 marks the third consecutive year that Amor has been named an All-Academic Athlete by USTFCCCA.
