Grand Junction, Colorado - The Cowboys split Saturday's doubleheader at Colorado Mesa winning the opener 3-1 and dropping the nightcap 12-1.
Pitching was the story line for the Cowboys in Saturday's first game as senior
Jadrian Martinez put together a gem as he went the distance to pick up his third win of the season. He scattered just four Maverick hits and struck out three batters. The Cowboys got all three of their runs in the top half of the fifth inning as
Lubby Marrujo scored the first run of the game when
Benito Martinez reached base on an error. Two batters later,
Tucker Simpson laced a double down the left field line that scored Martinez and
Tanner Hedrick.
Jadrian Martinez worked out of a sixth inning jam limiting the Mavericks to just one run and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Game two saw the Mavericks score early on the Cowboys going up 7-0 after two innings of play. The lone run of the game for NMHU came in the fifth inning when
Roman Robles scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Sinhue Gonzalez.
The Cowboys are now 8-37 overall and 4-23 in the RMAC.
The series finale from Grand Junction is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 pm.
