Cowboys Close Out Season With Doubleheader Sweep On Saturday

Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowboys closed out 2024 with a pair of wins over Colorado Christian on Saturday afternoon, winning 11-0 and 9-8.

Pitching was the name of the game in Saturday's opener as freshman Andrew Rodriguez went seven scoreless innings scattering five hits and striking out five. Hunter VanCurler came in and pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to lock down the win. Saturday's shutout for the Cowboys was the first since Kyle Bedsole blanked Fort Hays State on February 8, 2019.

Offensively the Cowboy hitters had five doubles and two home runs en route to the win. Gael Bernal was three for five with a homer and four RBI while Lubby Marrujo went two for three with a home run and three RBI. Benito Martinez, Carlos Chavez, Taiga Sato, and Nathan Corugedo also had multi hit games as the Cowboys pounded out 17 hits in the game.

In Saturday's second game the Cowboys used late game heroics to overcome five Colorado Christian runs in the top of the seventh inning. With the game tied 8-8, Lubby Marrujo got things started with a one out single. Gael Bernal followed with a single that advanced Marrujo to second. Benito Martinez ended the game with a single that scored Marrujo from second. VanCurler earned the win in relief for NMHU.

The Cowboys end the season at 10-40 overall and 6-26 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

As part of the weekend activities, the seniors and graduate students were recognized and presented with framed jerseys.

About the 2024 graduating class head coach Hary Esteep said, "The seniors have left this program in a better place than they found it and as a coach that is all I can ask for."
