Cowgirls Ground Skyhawks in Four

Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls end the first pod play weekend with a win.

Set One: Set one started as a back-and-forth affair, but a six-point run by the Cowgirls gave them an 11-5 lead. Trialing 15-8, the Skyhawks went on a five-point run of their own to make it 15-12. Then, down 18-14, the Skyhawks would get eight unanswered points to put the Cowgirls' backs against the wall. Five unanswered by the Cowgirls would be the boost the Cowgirls need. They win set one 26-24.

Set Two: Set two early was all Skyhawks, and they would run away with it 25-17

Set Three: The third set was led by a six-point run with not one, not two, but three service aces by Jaylee Gonzales. The Skyhawks would not go away quietly, but the Cowgirls tamed them and won set three 25-22.

Set Four: Cowgirls need the set to win. Like watching two boxers, the teams were exchanging punches, but no one backed down. The Cowgirls' lead is 13-8, but then the Skyhawks go on a six-point run, making it 14-13. The crowd comes alive at the John A. Wilson complex, and the Cowgirls fight to the end and get the victory 25-23. Game! Set! Match!!

Coach Meg Grose said this following this evening's win: "Tonight was an awesome win! We were able to put together everything we worked on this week and get a win. I am very excited for this group and can't wait to get back in the gym on Monday and get ready for our next home series!"

Win Notes: This win for the Cowgirls matches the total wins from last season, with five. It also makes it a split series so far. The Cowgirls will face the Skyhawks one more time this season, in a conference match.

Match Notes: Highlands had a total of nine service aces. Three were Jaylee Gonzales' in that 3rd set. Aziza Morris led the Cowgirls in kills (12). Marissa Sandoval-Moya led the team for the second straight game in assists (20). Elise Fourt also had a career-high of 10 kills.

Up Next: The Cowgirls will return home for a conference match against Regis. University Friday, October 10th (6 PM). Followed by a match Saturday with the Eagles of Chadron, October 11th (3 PM).
