Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands University cross country teams are back in action this Friday as they head to Colorado Springs for the UCCS XC Open, held at Monument Valley Park. The men's 8k race kicks off at 9:00 am, followed by the women's 6k at 9:45 am.
Coming off a strong showing last week in Pueblo, the teams gained valuable experience on the course that will host the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals in early November. This week offers another key opportunity, as they will compete on the same course that will serve as the venue for the RMAC Championships on October 25.
Last week in Pueblo,
Weldon Chebon captured the top spot in the men's 8k race with a 24:40.4 which was more than 30 seconds faster than the second place finisher.
James Kurui (25:53.5) and
Xavier Martinez (26:47.6) finished sixth and seventh respectively.
In the women's 6k,
Joan Kuyo finished third posting a 21:57.9 to lead all Cowgirl runners.
Summer Abeyta had another solid outing as she finished eight at 22:58.8 and freshman
Taylor Begay was 15th at 24:03.1.
Up next, NMHU returns to Colorado Springs' Monument Valley Park in two weeks for the 2025 RMAC Cross Country Championships.
