Outstanding Start For Track And Field At RMAC Championships

Colorado Springs, Colorado - The NMHU Track & Field team had an outstanding Day 1 at the RMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. Competing in six of the ten contested events on Friday, the Cowgirls put athletes in the finals of all but one, including sweeping four of the eight spots in the 60-meter dash.

"We had an outstanding Day One at the RMAC Championships," said Head Coach Bob DeVries. "No championship meet is ever perfect, I've been through enough to know that's true, but we positioned ourselves to do some big things tomorrow."

Three time All-American Patreece Clarke blazed to the top qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles (8.49), propelling her up the national performance list.

Clarke, along with Ashley Barrett, Rujeko Munetsi, and Kacian Powell, then stormed into the 60-meter dash finals. Barrett, the defending RMAC champion, clocked a blistering 7.35, leading all qualifiers. Munesti posted a personal best of 7.40, while Clarke and Powell tied with identical 7.63 times.

"Coach (Damia) Russell's sprint crew was a powerhouse today," noted DeVries.

In the 200m, it was once again Barrett (24.45) Powell (25.05) and Munesti (25.11) blazing into the finals with Barrett's time shattering the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse record by .35 seconds.

" I didn't think anyone could run under 24.50 on that track," said DeVries. "The previous facility record holder was a national champion in the 200, so Ashley's race is pretty remarkable."

Senior Chisom Obioha delivered a dramatic performance in the long jump. Facing elimination after two rounds, Obioha rallied to qualify for the finals and ultimately captured silver with a season-best tying jump of 5.76 meters.

Freshman Amoya Jameison secured a spot in the 400m final with her heat winning 58.57.

Day 2 from Colorado Springs gets under way at 10:30 am with Rojrika Campbell competing in the high jump and triple jump. Track events get under way at 12:00 pm.
