Canyon, Texas - The New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls track and field team delivered a series of outstanding performances at the Jo Meaker Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M on April 10-11.
The highlight for the Cowgirls came in the 4x100-meter relay, where the quartet of
Rujeko Munetsi,
Ashley Barrett,
Kacian Powell, and
Patreece Clarke blazed to victory in 44.71 seconds. This time is not only the fastest in NCAA Division II this season but also a new school record for NMHU.
Individually,
Ashley Barrett was sensational in the 100 meters, winning the event in 11.22 seconds. This performance shattered her own NMHU school record and propelled her to No. 2 in the national DII rankings.
In the triple jump on Friday,
Rojrika Campbell soared to a mark of 12.33 meters (40 feet, 6 1/4 inches). This leap not only secured the event win but also moved her to the top of the RMAC performance list and into the top ten nationally. Remarkably, this jump was over two feet further than her previous personal best.
Campbell continued her stellar weekend on Saturday, achieving another personal best in the long jump with a leap of exactly 6.0 meters (19 feet, 8 inches). This earned her a runner-up finish and positioned her at No. 16 on the national performance list.
Adding to the strong showing in the long jump,
Chisom Obioha matched her career best with a jump of 5.88 meters (19 feet, 3 1/2 inches), moving her onto the national qualifying list. Campbell and Obioha now hold the top two spots on the RMAC performance list in the long jump, with Campbell also leading the RMAC in the triple jump.
Freshman middle-distance standout
Summer Abeyta showcased her versatility by lowering her career best in the 800 meters by nearly five seconds, clocking in at 2:28.4. In the distance events,
Jewels Leslie recorded a new personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing fourth.
With the RMAC Championships just two weeks away, the Cowgirls will travel to Golden, Colorado, next weekend for the Mines Pre-Conference Invite on April 18, providing an opportunity to preview the championship venue.
