Mother Nature tried to rain on their parade, but the Cowgirls track and field team wouldn't be denied. In a shortened, one-day competition at the Texas Tech Red Raider Classic, condensed due to impending weekend weather, the Cowgirls delivered a strong performance.
Head coach
Bob DeVries had set clear goals: "We went into the meet with some specific objectives -- getting our relays going, solidifying our positions in the jumps and moving up on the conference performance lists." The Cowgirls checked every box and then some.
The relay teams were a force of nature. The 4x100m squad, comprised of Rujeko Munesti,
Ashley Barrett,
Kacian Powell, and
Patreece Clarke, blazed a blistering 45.36 seconds, catapulting them to 10th in the nation and seizing the RMAC's top spot by a dominant margin. Not to be outdone, the 4x400m team, with Amoya Jamieson joining Munesti, Barrett, and Powell, roared to a 3:47.5 finish, winning the event and bettering the NCAA qualifying mark in their season debut.
In the field,
Rojrika Campbell soared to two personal bests. Her leap of 11.92m (39'1") in the triple jump secured the top spot, while her 5.80m (19' 1/2") in the long jump earned her a close third, a mere inch shy of gold.
Back on the track,
Summer Abeyta continued her meteoric rise, slicing another three seconds off her own freshman record in the 1500m and dipping under the 5- minute mark (4:58.2) for the first time in her career. Fellow freshman, Zaivien Bowen launched her way into the RMAC championships with a personal best hammer throw of 40.57m (133' 0").
