Soccer In Lone Star State For First Road Match Of Season

Las Vegas, New Mexico - The NMHU soccer team hits the road for the first time this season traveling to Alpine, Texas, for a 2:00 pm (MT) Thursday afternoon match with Sul Ross State. The Cowgirls are 0-1-0 entering the Thursday match in Texas.

COACH EVANS: Amanda Evans is in her second season at the helm of Cowgirls Soccer. She logged her first NMHU career victory on September 5th of last season when she led NMHU to a 1-0 win over visiting Sul Ross State. Prior to coming to NMHU, Evans coached six seasons at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia.

LAST TIME OUT: The Cowgirls dropped their home opener on Thursday afternoon to West Texas A&M by a 2-1 count. Freshman Ninon Rigal got NMHU on the board late in the first half when she tallied an unassisted goal. The visiting Lady Buffs came out of the halftime break fast and tallied a goal just two and half minutes into the second half. They followed that up with the eventual game winning goal at 51:27 of the match. At that point, the West Texas A&M defense turned stingy allowing the Cowgirls just two shots on goal in the final 39:00 of the match.

Saturday's match with Eastern New Mexico was plagued with lengthy second half weather delays that led to the eventual postponement at the 55:17 mark of the contest.

SCOUTING SUL ROSS: Sul Ross was picked 15th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll that was released last month. The Lobos are 0-2-0 heading into Thursday's match with the Cowgirls after a pair of home matches to start the season to Adams State and CSU-Pueblo. John Dominguez is in his fifth season as the head coach at Sul Ross State. In the only meeting between the two teams, NMHU came away with a 1-0 win in a match played in Las Vegas to open the 2024 season.

"We're excited to hit the road for the first away trip of the season," said Coach Amanda Evans. "With a young team this is always an exciting time and a great bonding experience. The players are excited to set the standard for the season going forward. The standard that whether we are home or away, we show up with our best and we are relentless."

The next home match for NMHU is the 2025 RMAC opener on Friday, September 26th, against Black Hills State. Kick-off is at 4:00 pm.
