Silver City, New Mexico - The Cowgirls began their weekend in Silver City today with matches against Eastern New Mexico and Fort Lewis College.
Match One: The Cowgirls' first match was against the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico. The first set went quite the distance as the Greyhound took a commanding lead up 10-5, but the Cowgirls had perseverance and continued to claw and fight their way back, but ultimately fell in the first set 28-26. Set two provided a back-and-forth affair until the Cowgirls scored four unanswered, giving them a four-point lead and, in the end, a five-point win, 25-20. Set three, the Cowgirls held control, but it was a six-point run late that would be the difference; the Cowgirls won 25-19. Set four was all Cowgirls, winning the match 3-1.
Match One Notes: Meg Pfannerstill led the way in kills for the Cowgirls with 12, while
Becca Wiersema had four aces.
Adyson Hudson also had 15 digs, and
Abby Carlsen and
Naya Dornic each had 14 assists.
Match Two: In the second match of the day, the Cowgirls matched up with RMAC foe Fort Lewis. Set one was all Skyhawks, led by a pair of scoring runs. The deficit was too significant for the Cowgirls. Skyhawks to take set one 25-17. Set two was controlled by the Skyhawks, but the Cowgirls had a four-point run that made it a one-point set and a back-and-forth affair until the Skyhawks pulled away late, winning the set 26-24. The Cowgirls would not go away quietly as they started hot in set three and stayed hot, ultimately winning the third set 25-19. Set four would end in favor of the Skyhawks, 25-18, and they would win the match 3-1.
Match Two Notes: Aziza Morris led the Cowgirls in kills (8),
Naya Dornic also had 15 digs, and 16 assists.
Look Ahead: The Cowgirls will face Sul Ross State at 9:00 AM MST and then later play Western New Mexico at 2:00 PM MST.
