Ivan Smith earned First Team All-RMAC honors in an announcement by the conference office today.Ā
Smith earned the recognition after going undefeated in conference duals this season. He compiled a 25-3 overall record and closed the year on an eight-dual winning streak, including three straight major decisions to finish the season. Of his 25 victories, 22 came with bonus points.
"This is an exciting time of year. It's a culmination of the body of work that individuals have been putting in for the last seven-plus months. I'm happy for Ivan to earn this award and excited for him for what's to come," said Coach
Chris Freije. "He's one of those 'walk softly, carry a big stick' type of people. He's progress-focused, humble, a leader, and a true difference-maker in every sense of the word -Ā in life, school, and on the mat. He is a great example of someone who lives a lifestyle that embodies well-rounded excellence, daily improvement, and genuine gratitude for every opportunity he is afforded."
Smith is the first New Mexico Highlands wrestler to earn All-RMAC honors since former Cowboy great Allen Michel in 2022.
The Cowboys have this weekend off as they prepare for the NCAA Super Region VI Championship in Golden on February 28th.Ā .
The RMAC wrestling individual honors and all-conference rosters are voted on by the league's eight head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for themselves or their own student-athletes for any awards.
