Golden, Colorado - The New Mexico Highlands wrestling team qualified one individual for the NCAA Division II Championships at the NCAA Super Region VI Tournament on Saturday at Colorado School of Mines.
The Cowboys finished ninth as a team with 38.5 points, placing just behind RMAC rival CSU Pueblo.
For the second consecutive year,
Ivan Smith qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships by placing second at 165 pounds. He earned victories over conference rivals Jacob Blandford of Western Colorado, Will Alvarado of Colorado Mesa, and Tayten Gillette of Chadron State. Smith dropped a 4-2 decision to Trenton Munoz of Nebraska Kearney in the championship bout.
Sebastian Freeman finished fifth at 149 pounds, while
Diego Camarillo placed sixth at 125 pounds.
The NCAA Division II Championships begin March 13 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
