Cowboys Head to Kansas For Mid-Season Out-of-Conference Matchup

Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowboys will head to Emporia, Kansas, to face Emporia State in a mid-season out-of-conference matchup.

 
COACH JONES: Coach Steve Jones led the Highlands baseball squad for 17 years and was inducted into the H-Club Hall of Honor in 2019. Jones's NMHU teams qualified for the RMAC conference tournament 15 times and qualified for NCAA Division 2 Regionals six times, hosting the NCAA Central Regional in 2010. Jones's NMHU teams won two RMAC conference championships and three RMAC conference tournament championships. His teams reached the finals of the RMAC conference tournament championship game six times. Coach Jones captured his first victory in his return on January 30, 2026, in an 11-10 victory over Southern Nazarene.
Last Season: The Cowboys were 12-36 overall and 4-28 in the RMAC in 2025. 

 
RMAC Poll:   New Mexico Highlands was selected to finish eighth in the 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll, released today by the league office. The Cowboys collected 14 points in the vote.

 
Last Time Out: VS Colorado School of Mines
The Cowboys played a conference series last weekend, hosting Colorado School of Mines for four games. The Orediggers got the better of the Cowboys in a game-one extra-inning thriller, a come-from-behind victory in game two, followed by two more wins to secure the Orediggers' sweep of the Cowboys.


 
Scouting The Opposition: 
Emporia State:
Emporia State University is located in Emporia, Kansas, and is out of the MIAA conference. They sit at 16-6 overall on the season and 7-5 in the MIAA. The Cowboys will be the third RMAC team Emporia State has faced this season, after picking up four wins, two over Adams State and two over MSU-Denver.On August 25th, 2025, John Martin was named the head baseball coach at Emporia State. Martin has spent the last ten seasons at MIAA rival Central Oklahoma and led the Bronchos to five NCAA Tournaments and two MIAA Championships, including the MIAA Tournament Title last May. Martin compiled a 318-181-1 record during his 10 years at Central Oklahoma. Emporia State is 1-0 all-time against the Cowboys, with the only matchup in 2024 ending in a win for Emporia State.
