Emporia, Kansas – The New Mexico Highlands baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Emporia State, falling 13-0 in Game 1 and 13-1 in Game 2.
Emporia State used early offense and multiple big innings in both contests to pull away, as the Cowboys move to 5-19 on the season.
Game 1: Emporia State 13, New Mexico Highlands 0
Emporia State set the tone immediately in the opener, using a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to jump in front and never looked back.
The Hornets added crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings, plating four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to break the game open.
New Mexico Highlands was limited to just three hits on the afternoon, with
Ryan Rodriguez,
Alex Galvan, and
Truett Ross each recording one hit apiece.
Rodriguez and Galvan each collected doubles for New Mexico Highlands' only extra-base hits of the game.
Aidan Joyce (0-4) took the loss on the mound.Â
Alex Gilliam and
Cruz Lopez combined to finish the game out of the bullpen.
Game 2: Emporia State 13, New Mexico Highlands 1
The Hornets carried the momentum into Game 2, once again striking early with three runs in the first inning and adding to the lead in each of the next four frames.
Emporia State totaled 13 runs on 15 hits for the second consecutive game, highlighted by a pair of home runs and multiple extra-base hits.
The Cowboys showed some life in the sixth inning, breaking up the shutout as
Anthony Carrillo came around to score following a stolen base and a throwing error after
Elvis Park also swiped a bag to apply pressure on the base paths.
New Mexico Highlands finished with six hits in the nightcap, led by
Taiga Sato with two hits, while Rodriguez, Galvan, Ross, and Park each added one.
Andrew Baltazar (0-4) was tagged with the loss Barry Miller Jr. and
Reece Harney combined for 1.2 innings of relief to close out the game.
New Mexico Highlands closes out the non conference series tomorrow at 11:00 am (MT).
