Las Vegas, New Mexico - In a game that quickly turned into an offensive showcase, MSU Denver pulled away from New Mexico Highlands to secure a 29-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Brandt Field.
MSU Denver (28-6 overall; 16-0 RMAC) jumped out early, scoring three runs in the opening frame behind a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run. After adding three more in the third and two in the fourth, the Roadrunners built an 8-4 lead.
New Mexico Highlands (6-28 overall; 1-15 RMAC) responded with one of its best offensive stretches of the day in the middle innings. The Cowboys scored three runs in the third and added three more in the fourth to close the gap to 8-7.
Taiga Sato highlighted the rally with a two-RBI single, while
Ryan Rodriguez added a run-scoring double.
The game remained within reach until the sixth inning, when MSU Denver began to separate with a five-run frame. The Roadrunners then broke the game open in the seventh, sending 20 batters to the plate and scoring 15 runs on 11 hits.
Despite the loss, New Mexico Highlands produced 12 hits on the afternoon. Sato finished with three RBIs, while Rodriguez added two.
Tamden Webb-Tate provided a late highlight with a three-run home run in the seventh inning.
Anthony Reyes (1-1) took the loss for New Mexico Highlands.
The Cowboys return to action Friday evening at CSU Pueblo. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
