The NMHU Cowgirls tasted defeat for just the third time this season as they fell to the Zia's of Eastern New Mexico University 85-76 on 12/17 in the John A. Wilson Complex. A late run by the Zia's, assisted by some questionable calls, would spell doom for the Cowgirls as the Zia's would score nine unanswered points in the final minutes of the game to claim the win. The Cowgirls are now 5-3 on the season and will hit the hardwood again on 12/19 when they take on the Eagles of Northern New Mexico College.
The Cowgirls and Zia's would trade leads throughout the first half as both teams played fast paced up and down the court. The Cowgirls would hold a slim 41-37 lead going into halftime. The Zia's would quickly make up that deficit in the second half, but the Cowgirls would not back down. Both teams would continue to trade leads throughout the second half. When all was said and done the lead changed hands nine times throughout this in-state rival battle. In the end it would be the Zia's that would take this one home, thanks to some sharp shooting as the Zia's had five players in double figures. As a team the Zia's would finish the night shooting 46.8% from the field.
The Cowgirls struggled from the field most of the night as they finished shooting 36.7% from the field. The Cowgirls did excel from the free throw line with a 74.4% free throw percentage.
“I'm not very happy with our second half execution. We aren't going to win many games when we are shooting 36% from the field (22-60) and 13% from the three-point line (3-23). When we are struggling to shoot the ball we have to step it up on defense. We can't give up 48 points in a half and expect to win. All we can do now is work on fixing what happened tonight and focus on Northern New Mexico” said NMHU
Head Coach Tiffany Darling following the Cowgirls 85-76 loss to ENMU.
Leading the Cowgirls in scoring for the evening was
Ashley Logan. Logan worked hard in the paint all night and would finish with a game high 22 points. Logan also added in five rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal.
Other Cowgirls in double figures were:
Whitley Coca and
Katlyn Mary. Coca finished the night with 11 points five rebounds, one assist and two steals. Mary finished the night with 12 points, four assists, one blocked shot and one steal.
The Cowgirls will hit the floor again on 12/19 when they take on the Eagles of Northern New Mexico College at 1:00pm in the John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M.
