The Cowgirl soccer team has proved they are a force to be reckoned with in not only the RMAC but also in the Region. The Cowgirls hosted the ThunderWolves of CSU- Pueblo on 10/29 at Perkins Stadium. The Cowgirls took the game without even thinking in a very convincing fashion with a final score of 3-0. The Cowgirls sent off their two seniors,
Amanda Piho and
Yolanda Elias as they wrapped up regular season play.
Early on in the season, the ThunderWolves beat the #4 nationally ranked Fort Lewis Sky Hawks. The Cowgirls' last game was a lost to the Skyhawks 2-0 due to free kicks.
The Cowgirls' defense shut down every attempt the ThunderWolves took in the first half. The result was a shot less first half for the ThunderWolves while the Cowgirls took 10 shots on the ThunderWolves in the first period alone. The ball found its home in Cowgirl territory for most of the first half, and much of the game. The ThunderWolves couldn't even manage a corner kick in the first period.
Early in the first half the Cowgirls scored what appeared to be the first goal of the game, after
Julissa Rodriguez put it in the net, but it was called back after the official called it offside.
The Cowgirls rebounded and moments later Rodriguez scored on a free kick after a ThunderWolf foul. The score was then 1-0.
After the half, the Cowgirls kept their momentum going. Within 10 minutes of the start,
Britny Cottrell got her second goal of the season as
Krista Mashak brought the ball down the field and passed to Rodriguez who fed the ball to Cottrell.
As the game continued, Rodriguez was within scoring position, but kicked the ball over the goal.
The Cowgirls finished their scoring as Rodriguez was awarded a penalty kick. The ThunderWolves' goalie helplessly fell to the ground as she scored her 13th goal of the season.
The Cowgirls ended the game with 15 shots, nine of which were on goal. The ThunderWolves managed four shots, three of which were on goal.
All three of the Cowgirls' keepers saw minutes in the net.
Amanda Rose Johnson earned the win after playing the entire first half and allowed no goals as the ThunderWolves took zero shots. She is now 9-3-1 on the year.
Shannon Delarosbil had a save during her tenure in the net.
Scottie Prince rounded out the keepers with a pair of saves to end the game and hold the ThunderWolves scoreless.
The Cowgirls have finished their regular season with the best finish ever seen from the Cowgirl soccer program. Their record is 11-5-2 overall and 9-3-2 in RMAC play. They are currently in third place and will now play host in the first round of the RMAC tournament. They will be playing off against the Mountain Lions of UCCS. Last time the two teams met up, teh COwgirls came away with the 3-1 victory.
Be sure to support your Cowgirl soccer team as they continue their hunt at an RMAC Championship and NCAA Regional Tournament bid on 11/3 at 6 pm.
