The NMHU Cowgirl Softball team added two more in the win column on 2/6 as they rolled through the Aggies of Panhandle State University. The Cowgirls dropped the Aggies by scores of 10-6 and 11-3 for the weekend sweep. The Cowgirls are now 3-1 overall and off to their best start in recent memory. The Cowgirls will be hitting the road on 2/12 as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to take part in the Desert Stinger Tournament.
The Cowgirls rode a late sixth inning surge to secure their first win of the day. The Cowgirls racked up 10 hits in the win. The Cowgirls finished the day with a .370 batting average.
The Cowgirls were led offensively by
Melissa Martinez and
Ashley Bryan. Martinez finished with two hits, one run scored, two RBI's and one homerun. Bryan finished with three hits, two runs scored, three RBI's, one double and one homerun.
Melissa Martinez started out on the mound for the Cowgirls. Martinez would pitch five and one third innings for the Cowgirls and allow six runs on six hits. Martinez would add in four strikeouts in her outing.
Kelsey Groffwould come in for relief of Martinez in the fifth inning. Groff would end up getting the win as she pitched a solid one and one third innings. Groff allowed two hits and no runs and added in two strikeouts in her outing.
In game two the Cowgirls offense took over as the Cowgirls dropped the Aggies by a final score of 11-3. The Cowgirls would end the game with a .409 team batting average. The Cowgirls offense really opened up as they hit two doubles, one triple and two homeruns in the win.
Offensive leaders for the Cowgirls were: Melissa Martinez and
Tanya Groff. Martinez finished the game with one hit, one run scored, two RBI's and a homerun. Groff would have the big shot of the day as she finished the day with only one hit, but that hit was a four RBI grand slam to vault the Cowgirls into the lead and end the day for the Aggies.
On the Mound for the Cowgirls was
Kelsey Groff. Groff sealed up her second win of the day as she would pitch five complete innings for the Cowgirls. Groff allowed just five hits and three runs in her five inning appearance. Groff would also add in a season high seven strikeouts. Groff is now 2-0 for the season.
