Cowgirls Trample Orediggers in Two Games

#2 Ashley Paiz
The NMHU Cowgirl Softball team hosted the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on 3/12. The Cowgirls came away with two wins on the day as they head into another double header against the Orediggers on 3/13. The Cowgirls are now 9-6 overall and 5-1 in RMAC play. The Cowgirls are off to the best start in recent years and are making strides through the RMAC

In game one, the Cowgirls took the early lead in the first inning as Ashley Paiz took charge on the mound and at bat. Paiz singled right up the middle to put her on first base with Brianna Rodriguez up next. Paiz then stole a base to get her to second base. Chanel Ewing was up next after Rodriguez reached first base. Ewing took one for the team as she hit a sacrifice bunt to advance her teammates. Tanya Groff hit a single to left field and allowed her two teammates to score. The Cowgirls took their early lead 2-0.

The game would remain 2-0 until the fourth inning when the Orediggers had a one run homerun and then scored another run in the fifth inning. The Cowgirls answered back as Kelsey Groff hit a single on the right side bringing in two RBIs for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls would score two more runs during their last at bat in game one. Paiz earned her first win after pitching the complete game and she also went 4-3 at the plate. She had three walks and two strikeouts on the mound for the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls won with a final score of 6-3.

Game two was a different story for both teams. The game was scoreless on both sides through the fourth inning. The Orediggers were able to score two runs in the fifth inning but the Cowgirls answered back with two runs of their own.

Starting off the Cowgirls' scoring action was Amanda Beauchamp with a triple to right center. Kelsey Groff was able to get a walk from the Orediggers and then she stole second base. Both Groff and Beauchamp advanced on a pass ball, notching one run for the Cowgirls with another in scoring position. Groff once again took advantage of a wild pitch and was able to score a run, with ease. The score was then tied at two apiece.

The Cowgirls struck it big as the sixth inning brought five more runs in to secure their win. The Cowgirls had two runners on base after they each got a single. Andin Anderson knocked the ball to the outfield and then advanced to third on an error. This brought in two more runs for the Cowgirls and put Anderson in scoring position. Beauchamp had another big at-bat for the Cowgirls as she doubled to centerfield and brought Anderson home. Ashley Bryan singled to right center, allowing Beauchamp to score another run for the Cowgirls. Paiz followed the pattern of big at-bats when she tripled to right field, bringing in another run and the last of the scoring for the Cowgirls.

Melissa Martinez earned another win on the mound as she struck out 10 batters and walked two. She is now 5-1 on the mound for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls continue action 3/13 as they finish the series with the Orediggers. The action starts at 12 pm at Brandt Field.
