Mustangs Grab RMAC Series From Cowgirls

The Cowgirl Softball team started off their spring break with an RMAC series against in state foe Western New Mexico University on 3/23-24 in Silver City, NM. The Cowgirls lost the series to the Mustangs, but they didn't go down without a fight.

In game one, the Mustangs took the quick lead against the Cowgirls as the score was 4-0 after the first inning. It wouldn't be until the fourth inning that the Cowgirls would get on the board, but were unable to score the rest of the game. Melissa Martinez took to the mound for the Cowgirls. She had nine hits, 13 earned runs and eight strikeouts for the Cowgirls. Tanya Groff and Andin Anderson led the Cowgirls as they both went 3-2 at the plate in game one. The Cowgirls lost 13-5 in game one.

In game two, the Cowgirls played to the Mustangs' level but were unable to pull out the win. On the mound for the Cowgirls was Ashley Paiz. Paiz had five strikeouts, eight hits, and six earned runs. She was also one of the big hitters for the Cowgirls as she went 4-3 at the plate. Groff led the Cowgirls scoring as she hit two homeruns and tallied in four RBIs on the game. The Cowgirls were in the lead until the Mustangs had four runs late in the 7th inning. The Cowgirls would end up on the bottom of the score, losing 6-5. Paiz is now 1-1 for the Cowgirls this season on the mound.

Game three saw Martinez back on the mound for the Cowgirls. She tallied 12 strikeouts and six runs, with two of those runs earned. The Cowgirls held their lead through the third inning when the Mustangs tied it up 3-3. The Cowgirls would have two more scoreless innings, while the Mustangs took the quick lead. Anderson and Groff again lead the Cowgirls as they went 4-3 and 2-1, respectively, at the plate. The Mustangs would take this game from the Cowgirls with a final score of 6-3. Martinez is now 5-3 on the season.

Groff would take to the mound for the Cowgirls in game four. She finished the game with one strikeout, nine hits and four earned runs. Chanel Ewing helped the Cowgirls in game four as she went 4-2 at the plate and scored two runs. The Cowgirls held the Mustangs' until the third inning when they finally scored a run. The Mustangs had a big sixth inning as they scored three runs on the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls couldn't pull it out as they fell to the Mustangs with the final score 4-3. Groff is now 1-5 on the mound for the season.

The Cowgirls will now travel to Chadron, NE as they take on the Eagles of Chadron State University on 3/27 and 3/28.
