The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road to take on the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The Cowgirls won the series taking three of the four games. This is the first RMAC series the Cowgirls have won since Head Coach Shellie Broyles took to the helm in the 2008 season.
The Cowgirls took game one in convincing fashion with a 13-4 score. Leading the Cowgirls to their first win on the weekend was freshman pitcher
Melissa Martinez. She pitched the entire six innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. The Cowgirls hit it big in the second inning as they scored eight runs in that inning alone. The bases were loaded as
Chanel Ewing approached the plate. She hit a grand slam homerun, her first for the season, right over the centerfield fence to bring in four runs. Taking notes from Ewing was
Tanya Groff as she homered over the right center fence soon after for her third homerun of the season. Late in the sixth inning
Kelsey Groff followed the homer suit as she knocked one over the left center fence line.
The second game was a rough spot for the Cowgirls as they lost 7-5.
Kelsey Groff pitched 5.2 innings for the Cowgirls and recorded three strikeouts and only allowed eight hits. Tanya Groff finished the game for the Cowgirls. In the second inning
Diana Garcia hit a homerun over the left field fence, her first for the season. Garcia finished the game 3-2 at the plate. Ewing continued her great swinging as she went 4-5 at the plate.
Alysha Alvarez went 3-4 for the Cowgirls and was the leading scorer with 2 runs.
Day two of action for the Cowgirls saw nothing but wins. Martinez returned to the plate and earned the win while playing seven innings and recording 10 strikeouts. It was homerun time for the Cowgirls as they kept them going over the fence. Tanya Groff got a homerun in the third inning to start off the homerun action. Two batters later,
Kelsey Groff hit a homerun and put the Cowgirls up 5-0. Ewing finished out the homeruns in the sixth inning, which would be the last run for the Cowgirls scored in this game. The Cowgirls ran away with the game after winning 7-1.
In the last game of the weekend Tanya Groff took to the mound for the Cowgirls as they played through extra innings. She pitched 3.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts. In the second inning
Andin Anderson hit her first homerun of the season to put the Cowgirls up 1-0.
Kelsey Groff came in to pitch in the fourth inning and recorded two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. The sixth inning saw Martinez return to the mound for the Cowgirls. She recorded two strikeouts in 3.0 innings of play and eventually earned the win for the Cowgirls as they won 7-5. Martinez is now 4-1 on the mound.
Ewing is in the top of the RMAC with a .531 batting average while Martinez is very close to the number one spot in slugging percentage category. She is currently number two in the RMAC with .971 and Ewing is at .813 percent at the number six spot. Martinez also leads the RMAC in homeruns with seven and Tanya Groff is tied for fourth place with four homers. As a team, the Cowgirls have scored 96 runs leading the RMAC by a large margin.
The Cowgirls are now 7-6 overall and 3-1 in RMAC play. They will now play host to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on 3/13-14 at Brandt Field with two RMAC double headers beginning at 12 pm.
