Cowgirls Split with Zias

Groff Dominates on the Mound and at the Plate

#4 Kelsey Groff
The Cowgirl Softball team took to the road as they travelled to Portales, NM to take on the Eastern New Mexico Zias in a non conference matchup. The Zias and Cowgirls split in the doubleheader with the Cowgirls losing the first game and then winning the second game.

In game one, the score was close as the Zias won with a score of 1-0. A number of Cowgirls were able to get a hit, going 1-3 at the plate, but were not able to score. It was late in the third inning when the Zias scored. Ashley Paiz was on the mound for the Cowgirls and is now 2-5 on the season.

Game two had enough action to make up for the lack of action in the first game. Kelsey Groff took to the mound for the Cowgirls and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. She pitched seven innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits. She struck out four batters and walked only one.

The Cowgirls took the early lead and the Zias attempted to catch up but couldn't do it. By the fourth inning, the Cowgirls were up 8-1. The Zias committed two big errors in the fourth allowing the Cowgirls to score four runs. Groff kept the flow going in the fifth inning as she hit a homerun over the left field fence line. The Zias answered back with a four run inning to close the gap in the score to 9-5.

The Cowgirls stepped their game up in the last inning as Ashley Bryan hit a homerun over centerfield to bring in two RBIs. The Zias could not answer back and they won 11-6. Groff earned the win and is now 3-4 on the mound for the Cowgirls.
