Cowboys Claim RMAC Regular Season Title with 15-8 Win over Mesa State

The #7 NMHU Cowboys dropped RMAC rival Mesa State College on 4/23 by a final score of 15-8. With their 33rd win of the season, the Cowboys claimed the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship for the first time in Head Coach Steve Jones' 13 year career at the helm of the Cowboy Baseball program. The Cowboys are now 33-6 overall and 23-3 in RMAC play.

“This is such a great year thus far. We have broken a ton of records and this is by far one of my best seasons at NMHU. The guys have done a great job and we will just keep riding this wave. It's a great feeling to be #1 in the RMAC. This is a testament to our hard work and dedication all season long” said Cowboy Head Coach Steve Jones of his team's landmark win.

The Cowboys came out firing on all cylinders against the Mavericks as they finished with a team batting average of .333. The Cowboys racked up 13 hits in the win and finished the night with three home runs, one triple and one double.

On the mound for the Cowboys was Drew Vassil (11-1). Vassil pitched five innings and allowed just seven runs on seven hits while recording six strikeouts in his 11th win of the season. David Saiz came in to relieve Vassil and allowed one run on three hits in two and two-third innings pitched while recording two strikeouts. Derek Grieve earned his second save of the season as he allowed zero runs on two hits and struck out two batters in one and one-third innings pitched.

Outstanding players for the Cowboys include: Christian Garcia and David Bustillos. Garcia finished the night with going 3-6 with two runs scored, one RBI and one triple. Bustillos finished the night going 3-5 with three runs scored and one double.

The Cowboys will take on the Mavericks again on 4/24 for a RMAC double header in Grand Junction, CO at 1:30 pm.
