Cowgirls Stun ThunderWolves

The NMHU Cowgirl softball team proved they are a top team as they faced the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, who are currently number one in the RMAC West Division. The Cowgirls played well as a team and swept the ThunderWolves in the RMAC doubleheader.

Kelsey Groff took to the mound for the Cowgirls in game one. In seven innings pitched, she allowed three earned runs on eight hits. She recorded her season high for strikeouts with 12 on the game. The Cowgirls allowed the ThunderWolves to score seven runs on eight hits.

The Cowgirls had a big third inning as they scored six runs on five hits. Groff hit a homerun over the left field fence and brought in three RBIs. The ThunderWolves answered back with a five run fourth inning as the Cowgirls committed two errors. The Cowgirls scored two more runs in the last inning to put them ahead 8-7. The ThunderWolves had the last at bat but Groff shut down the last two batters as they struck out looking to seal the deal. Groff is now 4-4 on the mound for the Cowgirls.

Melissa Martinez headed to the mound for the Cowgirls in game two. Martinez pitched seven innings and recorded a shutout on the mound. She struck out 11 batters and walked only two.

Game two seemed to be the scene of a homerun derby as the Cowgirls scored three out of their four runs off of bombs. The Cowgirls took the early lead in the second inning which started off with another Groff bomb to left field. The Cowgirls kept the ThunderWolves at the fence as Roxanne Avalos hit a bomb over the left field fence to start off the third inning. The last run for the Cowgirls came from Andin Anderson knocking the ball over the left field fence.

The Cowgirls shutout the ThunderWolves with a final score of 4-0. Martinez is now 8-7 for the Cowgirls on the mound. 

Anderson  was a standout for the Cowgirls as she went 5-7 on the day scoring three runs and bringing around four RBIs. Tanya Groff also went 5-7 on the day scoring one run and tallying two RBIs. Martina Chavez went 4-7 on the day.

The Cowgirls will wrap up their series with CSU-Pueblo on 4/25 with the first pitch scheduled for 11 am.
