Cowgirls Split in Season Finale

The Cowgirls softball team ended their season on a great note and sent their seniors off in style as they split with the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks in RMAC action. The Skyhawks took the doubleheader on the first day and the Cowgirls cleaned up on day two with two more victories.

In game one the Cowgirls took the early lead and held the Skyhawks scoreless until the sixth inning, which turned out to be a big inning for the Skyhawks. The Cowgirls gave up four runs in the inning which brought the score to 4-2 with the Cowgirls on the backside. Both teams scored one more run which meant the Cowgirls would fall short with a final score of 5-3.

Alysha Alvarez went 3-2 with two runs scored. Melissa Martinez earned the loss on the mound for the Cowgirls. She struck out 12 batters in seven innings.

Game two saw the Skyhawks take the early lead. The Cowgirls weren't able to score until the fourth inning when the Skyhawks already had a six run lead. The Cowgirls only scored one more time in the game. The Skyhawks won in a convincing fashion with the final score being 7-2.

Kelsey Groff was on the mound for the Cowgirls for seven innings and struck out two batters. She lead the Cowgirls at the plate as well going 3-2 with one run and one RBI for the game.

On day two the Cowgirls were able to show the Skyhawks they weren't going down without a fight. Both teams were scoreless until the Cowgirls scored in the fourth inning. The Skyhawks answered back with a run in the fifth and then were not able to score again. The Cowgirls capitalized and scored in the sixth inning and won the game with a score of 2-1.

Cowgirls leading the team in their win include Groff, going 2-2, and Natasha Reyes, who went 1-2 and recorded an RBI on the game. Martinez won on the mound again for the Cowgirls. She pitched seven innings and struck out four batters.

The final game of the series and season was full of action. The Cowgirls stepped their game up and had the lead with a score of 6-0 after the second inning. The Skyhawks answered back with a four run third inning. They kept their scoring going to tie take the lead 7-6 in the fifth inning. The Cowgirls answered back as Ashley Bryan went yard and brought in two RBIs to put the Cowgirls back in the lead.
Martinez sealed the deal for the Cowgirls as she struck out the first three batters in the seventh inning to end the game. Martinez finished the season 9-9.

Standouts for the Cowgirls include Tanya Groff, 1-1 with three RBIs, Samantha Butler, 3-2 with two runs scored, and Bryan who went 1-2 with three RBIs and one run scored.

The Cowgirls sent off three seniors- Martina Chavez, Andin Anderson andDiana Garciaas their season comes to an end. This season definitely proved to be a good one for the Cowgirls as they finished 17-29 overall and 12-23 in RMAC play.
