Cowgirls Drop Last Home Game to Western State 85-59

The NMHU Cowgirls lost their last RMAC home game to Western State College of Colorado by a score of 85-59. The Cowgirls had the lead for the beginning of the first half but couldn't keep up with the more experienced Mountaineers. With their loss the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, drop to a 7-12 record in the RMAC and 12-15 in overall play.

Domonique Rivera was the lone Cowgirl in double figures as she scored 11 points in the contest. Rivera shot 4-7 from the field and made three of her four attempts from the free throw line. She would add two rebounds and a steal in her 34 minutes of playing time to lead the Cowgirls' efforts. China Smith scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds despite playing much of the game in foul trouble. She also had one blocked shot in her 20 minutes on the court. Alyssa Lopez would come off the bench to add eight points to the Cowgirls tally in only 12 minutes of playing time. Lopez was perfect from three point range and the charity stripe going 2-2 in each category and had two steals in her supporting role on the night.

Despite holding the lead for the first 10 minutes of the first half the Cowgirls just couldn't hold on against a veteran Western State squad. The Mountaineers benefited from some impressive play off the bench most notably by Megan Groen who scored 19 points in the game. Groen would give Western State the lead on a layup with 7:54 remaining in the first half and the Cowgirls never recovered. The Mountaineers entered half time with an 11 point lead 37-26.

Whitley Coca scored out of the gate in the second half but Western State answered immediately and continued to add to their lead during the remainder of the half. The Cowgirls couldn't find an answer for Western State's scoring frenzy and when the final buzzer sounded the score was 85-59 in the Cowgirls' final home game of the season. The Cowgirls have three games left in the season, all of them on the road in the RMAC.
