The NMHU Cowgirls lost on the road to RMAC opponent Metro State 69-45. The Roadrunners, ranked #1 in the conference, controlled the game showing why they are the team to beat in the RMAC this season. With their loss to Metro State the Cowgirls, lead by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to an 8-13 RMAC record and 13-16 in overall play.
Whitley Coca was once again the leading scorer for the Cowgirls with 21 points in the contest. Coca was 7-15 from the field, shooting 5-7 from the free throw line and made two of her eight three point attempts. She would also add five rebounds and one steal in her 39 minutes on the court.
Alyssa Lopez had five points off the bench in 21 minutes for the Cowgirls. Lopez would add one steal, one assist and one rebound to her tally for the game.
Marissa Magalei rounded out the scoring for the Cowgirls with five points in 19 minutes of playing time. Magalei also had a one steal and one rebound in the game for the Cowgirls.
Metro State came out of from the start looking to dominate the game jumping out to a 12 point lead five minutes into the contest. The Cowgirls struggled to stay in the game with the Roadrunners but were able to drop the deficit from 12 points to six in the final 1:30 of the first half. Metro State went into the locker room with a six point lead 34-28.
The Cowgirls were able to keep the margin in the single digits for the first 6:47 of the second half before the Roadrunners began to pull away. The Cowgirls had a tough time converting points and Metro State capitalized, methodically increasing their lead to 20 points with just 4:09 remaining in the game. The more experienced Roadrunners shut down the Cowgirls offense and proved worthy of being ranked eleventh in NCAA DII women's basketball. After time had run out Metro State was the winner by a score of 69-45. With the loss the Cowgirls split their road trip to Denver having won the previous night at Regis University.
The NMHU women's basketball team will continue conference action on 2/26 in their final regular season game against in state conference rival WNMU. The Cowgirls will travel down to Silver City to face a Mustang team that is currently in last place in the RMAC with a 1-20 conference record and 1-24 in overall play.
