NMHU Cowgirl Rodeo Brings Home Regional Championship

NMHU Rodeo Teams Look Forward to College National Finals

The NMHU Rodeo team finished off their regular season at the Grand Canyon Regional Rodeo that was held in Las Cruces, N.M. at the Dona Ana County Events Center. The NMHU Rodeo teams had a great showing as they placed in several events.

The big story of the day was the NMHU Cowgirls taking home the Grand Canyon Regional Championship. In spite of some adversity during the season, the Cowgirls were able to step up to the challenge and continue to win.

“I am very proud of these athletes. With all the adversity that came there way, they kept their heads and came out ahead,” commented NMHU Interim Head Coach Curtis Jones of his teams resilience throughout the season.

The Cowgirls would come away with the team title which entitles them to attend the College National Finals Rodeo on 6/12-18 in Casper, Wyo. Jackie Smith won a saddle for breakaway roping and was forth in the all-around, Randa Clabaugh won a saddle for Goat tying, Sammi Lane won second place in barrel racing, Jana Jasper ended up second in the all around which she competed in several events. Jasper was second in the goat tying as well as eighth in the breakaway roping. Kindee Wilson also won in several events where she was third in the breakaway roping and fifth in the goat tying and was third in the all-around. All of these young women will represent NMHU at the College National Finals.

Dirk Tavenner would win second place in steer wrestling and forth in the Tie-Down Calf Roping as well as finished seventh in Team Roping. Tevenner will be representing the Cowboy Rodeo team at the
College National Finals.

The other members on the team did well at the last rodeo as well. Robert Martinez ended up sixth in team roping. Jose Griego did well in the bull riding however he sustained injuries during the event and was unable to finish. The remainder of the team includes Riley Pollard, Justin Mascarenas, Chelsea DeMott, Morgan Howard, Kodi Armitage and Leah Widger.
