Dustdevils Overcome Cowgirls in Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic

#10 Eboni Jacobs
Box Score The NMHU Women's Basketball team fell short of capturing their first win of the season as they were defeated by the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International University in their first game of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic, on 11/23, in Kingsville, Texas.   With the non-conference loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 0-3 record in overall play.

The Cowgirls took the initial 4-0 lead in the game, but the Dustdevils were able to regain their focus and tie the game up.  The teams went back and forth for much of the first half, with the Cowgirls holding a narrow advantage.

Midway through the first half the Dustdevils took a 17-15 lead and they would not relinquish control of the game after that point.   When they reached the halftime break TAMIU took an eight point lead, 33-25, into the locker-room.

In the second half, the Dustdevils quickly re-established control and increased their lead to 10 points, but the Cowgirls' Eboni Jacobs cut the lead to seven with a three-point shot.  The Cowgirls fought hard to stay with the Dustdevils but were unable to close the gap.

TAMIU began to extend their lead five minutes into the second half, going up 49-34.  The Dustdevils would lead by as much as 21 points in the second half.   When the final buzzer sounded, TAMIU had come away with the 15 point victory, 72-57, in the first game of the TAMU – Kingsville Thanksgiving Classic.

Kate Cryderman led the Cowgirls in scoring with 13 points.  She made six of her eight field-goal attempts and grabbed four rebounds in her 24 minutes on the court.

Eboni Jacobs finished the game with 10 points in her 23 minutes of playing time.  Jacobs also contributed three rebounds, three assists, and three steals to the Cowgirls' efforts.

China Smith led the Cowgirls in rebounds with eight.  Smith had three points and a blocked shot against the Dustdevils in 17 minutes on the court.

The Cowgirls matched the Dustdevils in most statistics for the game, but they struggled at the free-throw line.  They were only able to shoot 33.3% from the charity stripe, while TAMIU made 63.2% of their free-throw shots.  The Cowgirls out-rebounded TAMIU 43-41, but it would not be enough to earn the victory.

The Cowgirls will play their next game of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Classic, on 11/24, against the host-team Javelinas of Texas A&M University – Kingsville.  The Javelinas are 1-3 this season after capturing their first victory of the season, 78-60, against Our Lady of the Lake junior varsity in the Thanksgiving Classic.  The game is set for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off time.  If you can't make the trip to Kingsville, Texas to watch the Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the games via streaming live stats.
