Cameron Holds Off Cowgirls 5-4 in Final Day of DSC

The NMHU Cowgirls fell to Cameron University 5-4 in their final game of the Desert Stinger Classic on 2/12 in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cowgirls fell into a 3-0 hole early after the top of the first inning as Cameron University capitalized on what would prove to be costly mistakes by NMHU. The Cowgirls battled back as they strung together a run an inning for the first three innings, after a Cameron score in the top of the third, the Cowgirls would close in on Cameron as Jenelle Klassen homered over the left field wall to make it 4-3 Cameron leading. Cameron scored one more run in the top of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Cowgirls would mount a comeback with Roxanne Avalos hammering a Cameron pitch over the right field fence to bring the Cowgirls within one 5-4. The Cowgirls comeback would fall short as the next three batter failed to get out of the batter's box. With the loss, the Cowgirls are now 2-3 overall in their young season.

Erica Wieck (1-2) got the start for the Cowgirls. Wieck finished the day allowing two earned runs (one unearned) on four hits in one and one third innings pitched. Jenelle Klassen would come in for Wieck in the second inning and finish the day allowing two earned runs on six hits in five and two third innings pitched while striking out a game high six batters.

Roxanne Avalos led the Cowgirls in hitting for the day finishing 2-3 with one run scored, one RBI and one of the three Cowgirls homeruns. Jenelle Klassen not only got it done for the Cowgirls in the pitchers circle, she also got it done in the batter's box as she finished the day 1-3  with one run scored, one RBI and one homerun. Brittany Potter rounds out the top three performers for NMHU as she finished 1-3 with one run scored, one RBI and one homerun.

The Cowgirls will be on the road again to take on their next opponents as the travel to Canyon, Texas to take part in the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Classic on 2/17-19. The Cowgirls will play Eastern New Mexico University, Tarleton State University and tournament host West Texas A&M over their stay in Canyon.
