The NMHU Softball team won both games of a double header against their instate rivals Western New Mexico University, on 3/14, in Silver City, N.M. The Cowgirls won the first game 10-1 in five innings. In game two the Cowgirls triumphed 12-7 after a complete seven innings. The Cowgirls also swept the first double header against the Mustangs, on 3/7, at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, N.M. With the swept of the series against the Mustangs, the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 10-6 record in the RMAC and 15-11 in overall play.
In game one, the Mustangs got on the scoreboard first with one run scored in the bottom of the first inning, but the Cowgirls struck back in the top of the second inning. Roxy Avalos started the offensive outburst with her leadoff homerun over the wall in right-center field. The Cowgirls would continue to score six runs from five hits to take a 6-1 lead.
The Cowgirls continued their offensive onslaught in the top of the third inning.
Erica Wieck started the scoring with her two-run homerun over the center-field wall. Then
Krista Mattice drew a walk and
Brittany Potter got into the action with a two-run homerun of her own over the left-field wall. The Cowgirls scored four runs in the inning to take a 10-1 lead.
The Mustangs could only muster one hit over the next two innings. The Cowgirls won the game 10-1 after five innings because of the run rule in collegiate softball.
Jenelle Klassen (7-2) was credited with the victory for the Cowgirls in game one. She threw the complete five innings from the pitcher's circle and faced 19 batters. Klassen only allowed the one run off of three hits and struck out three Mustangs.
The Cowgirls offensive scored 10 runs on seven hits and combined for a .333 team batting average.
Brittany Potter,
Erica Wieck, and
Roxanne Avalos were the offensive leaders in game one. Potter was 1-1 at the plate, drew two walks, and had three RBIs, scored two runs, and hit a homerun. Wieck hit 2-4 from the batter's box with three RBIs, two runs, and a homerun. Avalos was 1-1 at the plate, drew a walk, and had an RBI and a run scored from her solo homerun to start the Cowgirls scoring.
In game two, the Cowgirls started the scoring with two runs in the second inning.
Roxanne Avalos singled up the middle and
Shelby Watts stepped up and hit a two run homerun over the left-field wall.
Brittany Potter added another run for the Cowgirls in the third inning when Katie drove her in with an RBI single up the middle. After three innings of play the Cowgirls had the 3-0 lead.
The Cowgirls' offense exploded in the top of the fourth inning with five runs on five hits.
Alisha Perry started the scoring when she scored from third base on a wild pitch.
Katie Kerr and
Lynette Directo each put up an RBI single and
Molly McDougall hit a two-RBI single to left-center field. The Mustangs finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run homerun to left-center field. The Mustangs then put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After five innings of play the Cowgirls were still in the lead 8-5.
Erica Wieck's two-RBI single added more runs for the Cowgirls in the sixth inning. The Cowgirls'
Katie Kerr and
Roxanne Avalos would each add a run in the seventh inning with a pair of solo homeruns. The Mustangs tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the seventh inning and they got two runs from a two-run homerun over the wall in left-center field. The Cowgirls shutdown the Mustangs' comeback and won the game after seven innings by the final score of 12-7.
Jessica Brink (4-0) was the winning pitcher for the Cowgirls in game two. She threw three and two thirds innings, faced 19 batters, and allowed three runs from four hits. Brink walked three Mustangs and struck out two.
Jenelle Klassen relieved Brink in the fourth inning. She threw three and a third innings from the pitcher's circle, faced 17 batters and allowed four runs on four hits. Klassen only allowed two earned runs, walked two batters and struck out two.
The Cowgirls offensive was on fire in game two with a .405 team batting average. They scored 12 runs on 15 hits with three homeruns.
Katie Kerr,
Roxanne Avalos, and
Erica Wieck were the offensive leaders in game two. Kerr was 3-5 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a homerun. Avalos hit a perfect 3-3 from the batter's box and drew two walks. She scored two runs, had an RBI, and hit a homerun. Wieck finished the game 3-5 at the plate with two RBIs.
Shelby Watts also hit a homerun in the second game.
The Cowgirls' offense is for real this season. They combined to score 22 runs in the double header and hit six homeruns.
Brittany Potter is the RMAC homerun leader this season with 11. The Cowgirls are currently in third place in the RMAC with their 10-6 conference record.
The Cowgirls will continue conference action, on 3/17-18, as they host the Roadrunners of Metropolitan State College for a four game series in Las Vegas, N.M. The Roadrunners are in ninth place in the RMAC with a 5-7 conference record and 8-16 in overall play. Game one on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 12 pm and on Sunday at 11 am.
