The New Mexico Highlands softball team improved their record to 12-8 (7-3 RMAC) with a pair of wins over Western New Mexico University (11-12, 6-4 RMAC) on 3/7. The Cowgirls cruised to easy wins with scores of 6-0 and a five-inning 12-3 second game.
Western's starting pitcher, Ricki Gentry, faced only six batters and gave up three walks and six earned runs. Highland's ace,
Jenelle Klassen, pitched both complete games with six strikeouts and only two earned runs. Highlands has won three in a row and have jumped to third in the RMAC standings.
Outfielder
Lynette Directo had one of her best days as a Cowgirl going six for seven at the plate including four runs, two RBI's and a homerun.
Defensively, Highlands fielding was impeccable as they had one error the entire day as opposed to the Mustangs' six.
Game one was controlled incrementally for the Cowgirls with a run in the second inning to start the momentum. The Mustangs bats tried to come alive but Klassen pitched furiously against the cross-state rival.
“Our girls played great today. The defense did an amazing job adjusting to the windy conditions and we played our home field extremely well,” said Head Coach Shellie Broyles. “I'm really happy at how well we executed and am looking forward to taking on Colorado Christian this weekend.”
Highlands travels to Denver, Colo. for a pair of double headers at Colorado Christian University on 3/10 and 3/11 starting at 11:00 AM both days.
