Thunderwolves Sweep Cowgirls in Day One Double Header

#8 Roxanne Avalos
The NMHU Softball team dropped both games of their first double header against the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo, on 4/6, in Pueblo, Colo.   In game one, the Thunderwolves scored three runs and rode that lead to victory, by the final score of 3-2.  The Thunderwolves scored nine runs in four innings to win game two, 9-1, by the eight run rule in collegiate softball. With the losses against the Thunderwolves, the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, fall to a 13-15 record in the RMAC and 19-23 in overall play.

CSU-Pueblo scored three runs in the first inning of game one.  They took advantage of two hits but two of their runs were scored on throwing errors by the Cowgirls.  The offense on both teams struggled throughout the game.

The Cowgirls finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on two hits.  Roxanne Avalos led off the inning with a single then Lynette Directo got on base thanks to a fielding error by the CSU-Pueblo shortstop.  With the base runners on second and third, Katie Kerr stepped up to the plate and hit a two-RBI single up the middle.  The game finished without any more runs being scored and the Thunderwolves won game one by the final score of 3-2.

Jessica Brink (6-5) was credited with the loss in game one for the Cowgirls.  She threw a complete six innings from the pitcher's circle and faced 25 batters.  Brink allowed three runs on four hits, but only one of the runs was earned.  She struck out five batters and walked two.

The Cowgirls' offense struggled in game one.  They only provided a combined three hits and scored two runs.  Roxanne Avalos and Lynette Directo both scored runs for the Cowgirls.  Katie Kerr finished 1-2 at the plate with two RBIs.

The Thunderwolves again took the early lead in game two.  They scored two runs on three hits in the first inning and the Cowgirls allowed one of the runs to score on a throwing error.  The Thunderwolves extended their lead to five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with three runs off three hits and the aid of another Cowgirls' error.

Shelby Watts got the Cowgirls on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning.  She hit a leadoff double and eventually scored on a throwing error by CSU-Pueblo.  The Thunderwolves scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Their first run scored from third base on a wild pitch.  They also got a two-run homerun and an RBI single in the inning.  The Cowgirls could not score in the top of the fifth inning so the Thunderwolves took the victory in game two, 9-1, by the eight run rule.
